Furniture Refinishing

For holes and indentations:
1. Clean the repair area with dewaxer.
2. Select the proper color stick. (choose the lightest lacquer Burn-In Stick which matches the damage’s background color. Be careful to get a good match!) transparent sticks are used to refill shallow indentations where the original shade of the finish remains but is no longer level.
3. Sand the area gently to remove any splinters and rough areas, and to remove the ridge around the damage.
4. Using a Burn-in Knife, melt the Burn-in Stick and allow melted stick to flow into the damaged area until it is slightly overfilled.
5. Protect the existing finish by applying Burn-In Balm to the surrounding area.
6. Pulling the Burn-In Knife, level the Burn-In Stick with flat strokes. Always wipe the knife clean between strokes.

Thought I'd share these pics as I am feeling rather proud of my accelerated learning curve due to my time here at Groop. This was a very expensive Armoire (Drexel Heritage) in a local Dr's home. I was called out to repair this 1.5" gouge out of the side of the armoire. The customer did not want to go through the problem of returning the item, and the furniture store was pleading for me to complete the repair, thanks by the way to Carol and the Hotline for this referral.

I basically used some tootsie roll epoxy putty to fill in the gouge, smoothed it with Green Magic (see Pro Refinishers mag, several months ago) and began layering colors using Golden acrylic Burnt Sienna and Burnt umber. After two light coats, I dabbed on some Finish up, satin, then applied a very light layer of some Bronzing powder then applied Burnt Sienna with a light overcoat of Burnt umber. Wiped on some finish up, flat sheen, crossed my fingers and had the Doc come in to inspect.

It took him a few seconds to remember where the damage was in the first place. What a great feeling. Professional Refinishers Group

Here are some things this novice has learned about doing burn-ins this past year:

1. Lower the heat setting, especially when doing 90degree edge repairs. Material should be semi stiff so as to not run when applied.
2. Back of used sandpaper sheet can be used to mix lacquer sticks on to hit the color you want. To put material on knife as you heat lacquer lift sandpaper sheet from laying flat to upright so lacquer stick material lays on blade.
3. Reduce amount of lacquer stick applied ( less to take off).
4. Place material at top of repair then turn blade over so as to get a clean surface to apply pressure with burn in knife with light to medium pressure. If pressing to hard on knife it will drag and cause uneven repair.
5. Mohawk transparent honey mixed with a little of another lacquer stick(pick closest match) can hit most medium to dark color repairs
6. Mohawk Pine Pro Mark marker #M267-1516 is a great all-round color for repairs. Apply, count one thousand, two thousand, then rub off excess with thumb(lightly)or use wet 4 0000 steel wool.
7. If lacquer stick applied needs to be removed from repair for any reason, use narrow side of burn in knife to drag material out of repair, then turn knife to large flat surface of blade and remove excess material.
8. The deeper the damage to repair use light lacquer stick color and built from there, go darker if needed towards top.
