World's Fastest Profile Scriber

Eagle: "This one-of-a-kind tool was designed to overcome the frequent woodworking problem of keeping your scribe at a constant distance from the profile or surface you want to copy. Sure, it's easy to do when everything is flat or at right angles, but what about when you are trying to fit your piece against a contour of any kind?

The Perfect Butt solves that problem. It comes with three different sizes of interchangeable tracing wheels which hold your pencil stable at its center and follow along almost any surface, keeping it at a constant distance from the profile you are copying and ensuring an accurate copy every time. Your pencil is also spring loaded so that it will remain in constant contact with your work piece whether it is flat or upright. About $30"

Router Fence

Eagle Tools: "The exclusive 37' long heavy-duty aluminum extrusion provides multiple mounting channels for our complete range of accessories or any jigs or fixtures that you can create using standard 1/4-20 hex-head bolts.

The infeed/outfeed faces are made from super-slick HDPE plastic allowing your work to move smoothly across the fence. They can also be independently shimmed for edge jointing. The 4-1/2' bit opening is large enough to accommodate any size bit, and by using our zero-clearance inserts you can virtually eliminate tear-out. The quick release hold-down cam-clamps are adjustable to accommodate any thickness of top and make our fence easy to fine tune or quickly remove from the table.

Additional Freedom features include: easy to read right to left and left to right tape measures, 2-1/2' quick-connect dust port, and an extra-large 6-1/2' x 3-1/2' adjustable bit guard. The Freedom Fence measures 37' long by 4-1/2' wide and is 4' tall and will fit any tabletop that measures from 24' to 35'."

50% lighter than rubber hoses

Flexeel Air Hose: "I noticed this thin, blue hose snaking from a corner of the room to the air nailer presently in use. Being a curious person, I promptly had that hose in hand and marveled at how flexible and light it was. I knew I had to have one for my own shop as I was getting increasingly frustrated with the products I had been using. The product in question is called Flexeel and is available from Coastal Tool and others. This translucent light blue polyurethane hose is very light in weight so it doesnt interfere with tool movement. It also is loath to kink, even when it's been coiled for a period of time. It doesn't stiffen in cold weather either. Flexeel is available in several lengths of straight hose and has standard 1/4' NPT brass ends--you provide the quick-disconnect connectors of your choice. It is also available in a coiled version that is perfect for overhead suspension in the shop where appropriate. Pricing is very reasonable, too, although more than the cheap hoses available at the home center. A 50' length runs about $33 and is worth every penny."

Carpet Stains May Give Clues to Significant Energy Loss

Too little air supply: Do you ever notice dark stains along the edges of walls or at door ways in your home? These black stains are likely caused by air that is drawn into your home by the forced air unit of your air conditioning/heating system. If there is an imbalance in the supply (air that is blown out of the ducts) and the return (air that is sucked in at the forced air unit), these stains may be a telling result. When the forced air unit is not drawing in approximately the same amount of air that it is blowing out, it will make up the balance by pulling air through any leaks in the building envelope of the home. In the instance of stains in carpet along walls and at doors, air is being drawn in from the outside of the home or from attic spaces. The carpet is acting as a filter and removing some of the moisture and grime from this infiltrating air."

Another local lumber supplier...

Beronio Lumber was founded in 1911 by Antone V. Beronio. The original yard was located on Powell and Beach streets on, what was then, San Francisco's busy waterfront. The yard serviced the countless contractors who were busy rebuilding the city. This was the era of the proud craftsman. Quality millwork was the standard. Doors were hung on the job, usually with a dime thickness tolerance. The city was blessed with numerous millwork houses producing doors, windows, circular stairs and custom details. Each firm had its signature moulding series. It was this wonderful diversity that created the rich architectural heritage that San Francisco still enjoys today. "

Excellent lumber source...

All Coast Forest Products Inc. was founded in 1975 by Daryl Bond as a small wholesale distributor in the southern California town of Whittier. There were five employees. Three years later, the company broke ground on 20 acres of land in the neighboring town of Chino. The staffing increased to 50, and All-Coast was well on the way to its goal of becoming a dominant lumber distributor in the region. All-Coast continued on an upward trajectory with the acquisition of a 97-acre remanufacturing and distribution facility in Cloverdale, California in 1988, a 1990 purchase of a 15-acre distribution center in Englewood, Colorado and the June 1999 purchase of the Salt Lake City, Utah Division. With these acquisitions, the company put itself in position to offer the western United States the quality and responsive service it has committed itself to over the years. Today, Daryl Bond is the sole owner in this family-run business of more than 170 employees.

EZ-Backer Drywall Splicer: "Perfectly flat walls and ceilings are finally possible with the new EZ-Backer. The EZ-Backer pulls back the edges of the cut end of the drywall creating a tapered edge. This can now be finished as a standard tapered joint. The result is a perfectly flat wall. (See detail to the left) The Splicer installs easily with drywall screws. In-house testing has shown that the tapered edge becomes permanent and will not release or cause cracks in the seam. Can be used everywhere in your project, but is especially useful where a flat wall is a must; such as behind all cabinetry and long drywall runs where seam visibility is most prevalent.

Updated ruling on code copyright...

No Copyright for Building Codes: "High Court Lets Ruling Stand: If code is law, it belongs to the public, says Justice Department In a legal blow to code-writing organizations, the United States Supreme Court has left in force an appeals court ruling that says citizens are free to publish model codes on the Internet whenever a state or municipality has adopted the code as law. In the 1998 case of Veeck v. SBCCI, Texas resident Peter Veeck asked a federal court for protection after the Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI) threatened to sue him for copyright infringement. Veeck had posted the Standard Building Code (SBC) on his website, describing it as the building code of Savoy, Texas, a town in his area that used the SBC as local code. (SBCCI is now part of the International Code Council, and the SBC has been absorbed into the International Building Code.) From Journal of Light Construction.

Housing trends...

Manufacturing Homebuilding Public Construction Heat Up Private Nonresidential Sags: "The value of construction put in place in October rose 0.9% from September's upwardly revised total to a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of $922 billion, the Census Bureau reported today. October's figure was the fifth straight increase and fourth consecutive monthly record. Both private residential and public construction set records, but private nonresidential construction fell to the lowest level in six years. Through the first 10 months of 2003, overall construction was up 3.7% compared to January-October 2002, led by a 9% gain in residential and a 3% rise in public construction, which more than offset a 6% drop in private nonresidential.

Several estimates of home price changes emerged in the past week. "Average U.S. home prices increased 5.6% from the third quarter of 2002 through the third quarter of 2003," the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight reported today (www.ofheo.gov). The calculation was based on repeat sales or refinancings of single-family houses whose mortgages have been purchased or securitized by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The data base thus excludes high-risk loans and loans above those companies' lending limits. Freddie Mac announced Tuesday that its lending limit would rise 3.4% from $322,700 currently to $333,700 in January, based on October-to-October changes in the average house prices, as published by the Federal Housing Finance Board's monthly survey of lenders for new and existing homes. The Census Bureau announced Wednesday that the median new-home price in October was $190,900, up 0.9% from the median price of new homes sold in October 2002. Sales totaled 1,105,000 (SAAR), down 3.5% from September but 10% higher than a year ago. The National Assn. of Realtors reported Tuesday that existing-home sales dropped 4.9% in October to 6,350,000 (SAAR), still the third-highest level on record. The median price was $172,400, up 8.2% from a year ago. The National Assn. of Home Builders reported Tuesday that the median price of condos sold in the first nine months of 2003 rose 15% compared to the same period of 2002, while sales of new and existing condos and co-ops rose almost 13%.

Absurd breakthrough...

Absurdist Woodworker - Jeff Greef Woodworking: "BREAKTHROUGH ANNOUNCED IN BOARD STRETCHER MACHINE RESEARCH

Details limited, but appears promising as advances in wood plasticizers progress
H.Q. Barnbuster III, Editor
East Wannanookie, WI

The Bradley Tool Company held a long-awaited press conference here yesterday to reveal progress in their ongoing research effort to develop a practical board stretching machine. While the machine is not yet in production and some hurdles are yet to be jumped, the major technological problem encountered has been solved and the company is well on its way, according to press releases. Today's announcement regarded an inexpensive and highly effective wood plasticizing formulation which facilitates stretching the boards.

'We found many different ways to plasticize wood, but all were cost prohibitive,' said Alfred V. Bradley, owner of Bradley Tool.

'In the laboratory, we were able to cause wood to become so elastic that it sagged and hit the floor like hot taffy. But the conditions under which it would do so required very elaborate equipment and dangerous chemical procedures. We had numerous explosions. Obviously, this sort of thing is not feasible for the average woodshop.'

Ventilation links...

Breathe easy: -- The right bathroom ventilation helps prevent mold and other pollutants. These days, homeowners are asking their builders and remodelers for bathroom ventilation that's powerful enough to ward off mold and mildew. Reducing mold, mildew, and other pollutants in the bathroom is a top priority, but it won't happen unless the fan is quiet. Exhaust fans should provide 1 cfm per square foot of space for bathrooms up to 100 square feet in area (based on 8-foot ceilings). For bathrooms more than 100 square feet, ventilation is based on the number and type of fixtures present (toilets, showers, baths, and whirlpools). Each fixture requires 50 cfm of power except whirlpools, which require 100 cfm. Enclosed toilets must have operable windows or separate fans. Uncommon links are:

Dollars for comfort...

Home Comfort To a New Level: "American Standard Survey Reveals How Americans Save Money on Energy Bills -- Do you know what household activities lower your energy bills the most? A recent poll commissioned by American Standard, a company that specializes in bath, kitchen and central heating and cooling systems, shows that respondents chose upgrading insulation as the number one way to save money when it's cold outside. Approximately one in three (32 percent) chose upgrading insulation, with lowering the thermostat following closely behind at 26 percent. Next was replacing your old heating system with a more energy efficient model (19 percent), turning out the lights with 14 percent and last, replacing bulbs (4 percent). Six percent chose other ways to save on their energy bills. These survey results indicate that people are aware of how to save money on their energy bills, but they may not actually realize how much money they can save.

How Smart Companies Grow

Says Remodeling Magazine, "If you're like most contractors, you're worth more than you're charging. What is a market position? One good way to explain it is to think about retail stores that sell clothing. Any chain you can think of picks a position based on demographic appeal. Wal-Mart and Kmart, for instance, are low-cost clothing providers. Dillard's, Macy's, and Foley's take the mid-range position. Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus position themselves as high-end providers of clothing. The market position of a business -- from service level to product quality and price -- shapes expectations well before customers walk in the door. Market position is about image, sales presentation, and product delivery -- in other words, the overall client experience or so-called intangibles. Sure, market position and price point have to do with product quality. But they have more to do with the customer experience and perceived value." "

WarmlyYours Under Carpet

"Environ II is a radiant heating system, but unlike other systems, it does NOT require to be installed in a layer of cement, making the installation easy for a flooring installer, or DIY homeowner. Of course the Environ II needs to be hardwired to a thermostat with an in-floor temperature sensor taped to the heating mat. The thermostat needs to be wired to a regular 110-volt circuit by an experienced electrician. Environ II is energy efficient. It is installed directly under the flooring material, over the foam pad. This installation method provides for additional insulation from the cold sub-floor. The EnvironII construction embodies an ultra-thin heating wire (1/12") into 4 layers of foil. The foil layers provide a fast and efficient distribution of heat. A 120 square foot coverage may cost 39 cents per day, on average."

If you're catering to the move-up buyer, however, you better change your strategy. To this group, closet storage is more important than it used to be. Catching up to Toto...

Feeling flushed??: New technology makes for a more efficient flush. After two years of studying fluid dynamics, talking with consumers about what they want in a toilet, and extensive development and testing, American Standard introduced its new flushing technology, the America's Best Flushing System, at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show this year. 'We find that consumers don't even want to think about the toilet,' says Robb Kass, vice president of marketing for American Standard. Currently available only in the manufacturer's new Champion model, the system focuses on efficiency by improving the mechanism by which water flows into the bowl, scours it, and is then siphoned out. Several unique features distinguish the system, according to Kass. The tank flapper mechanism was eliminated and replaced with the patent-pending Flush Tower. When the toilet is flushed, the tower mechanism opens the silicone-sealed flush valve and releases precisely 1.6 gallons of water in 0.75 seconds. Kass says the company chose to eliminate the rubber flapper because they can wear out or bind, causing problems. The tower shuts automatically after the water is released, even if the handle is held down. The Champion toilet meets most non-adjustability codes because the metered flush can't be adjusted. The tests? One flush took care of 31 synthetic sponges. Another flush took 16 cloth napkins, still another 41 rubber tubes, and, finally, 47 wadded up balls of toilet paper. They also flushed 29 golf balls. There's a water hazard that would test Tiger Woods. Price?? The first Champion model will retail for $400, comparable to popular imported models and about $150 more than 'most' competitors. "

ArchitectureWeek: "As the cost of photovoltaic (PV) technology declines, it is becoming more common for large companies and institutions to install vast arrays of PV cells to capture solar radiation and convert it into electricity. But until recently, it was the rare individual who would place expensive photoelectric panels on the roof of his or her house. Increasingly, however, lower costs and the appeal of an independent power supply have encouraged small businesses and homeowners to take a closer look at the options. "

Protect from Schultz

Easy preservative...Pressure treated lumber is great for outdoor applications, but in recent years there have been concerns about health risks from traditional treatment methods. Protect from Shultz is a Borate based insecticide/preventative that can be sprayed on lumber to protect it from termites and other destructive organisms. Because it is Borate based, it's safe for human contact and can be applied to any kind of wood. The gallon jug has a built in sprayer and sells for about $40.

Also from Lamello...

INVIS: "And this is the principle that makes everything possible.

The rotating magnetic field of the actuator turns the screw inside the joiner. The fine thread is screwed into the threaded bolt in the opposite part to ensure a tight connection.

The impact wrench effect of the INVIS joiner produces a knocking sound at the end of the screwing process (after approx. 5 seconds). This indicates that the connection is closed and also ensures amazingly high tightening values. Your work-piece is invisibly connected and can be dismantled again. "

5.3 scfm at 90psi. Not bad...

Porter-Cable's compressors seem to be the first to push portable compressor performance. Most job-site compressors cannot handle the higher outputs needed for job-site touch-up and small scale spraying. These units might begin to do the job. Amazon sells this unit for about $240. Won't trip a 15amp breaker.
After years and years of static specs, compressor makers are showing us good stuff. If you look hard enough, you can find small portable compressors with outstanding pressure and air delivery capabilities. One day though, I would like the manufacturers to lable clearly and completely in their ads and on the machine and on the box labels.

Pootatuck trimmer

Lion Miter Trimmer The purpose of this tool is to make precision miters without the need for sanding, planing or suffering tear out. Anyone looking to make frame molding, picture frames, cabinets or finish carpentry and who has used a miter box, miter saw or compound miter saw knows that additional planing or sanding is usually required for a glass smooth cut or glass smooth finish. About $250.

Look what $9000 will get...

CNC Router. And for $10,000 more?

Does this really save time?

Trim-Loc is made to measure, mark, and install casement trim. Built-in tape measure hook slots let you quickly and accurately measure jamb openings. It's also perfect for measuring your trim stock. Or fasten to your bench, hook the tape measure, and lay out perfect miters every time! Its 8 tools-in-one let you install trim faster, more accurately. Trim-Loc eliminates errors, reduces waste, saves time and money.

BenchDog also makes the ProTop router tables for mounting on a table saw. The mounting system is clean and it fits most contractor and cabinet style table saws with "t-square" style fences, as well as most late model table saws equipped with front and back aluminum rails.

Another innovative add-on for router and table saws is Panel-Loc, the first and only combination hand guard and panel hold down for router tables and table saws. Use it for routing panels or ripping large sheets of plywood or veneer. Panel-Loc provides a solid barrier between your hands and the cutter, perfect for when you're using large diameter bits on a router table, or are handling large sheets on a table saw. Panel-Loc's contact strip places low-friction pressure to ensure your work slides forward yet stays down on the table, where it belongs.

BenchDog also publishes a solid page supporting inventors that explains the procedures necessary when offering new ideas.

snap-off trim screw

Counter Snap: "This unique woodworking screw is simple to use and very cost effective at creating a tight bond where the final finish is critical. With the Counter Snap system you actually achieve the maximum results with the smallest possible disruption to the repaired surface. As the Counter Snap fixture automatically snaps the specially designed screw shaft -5/64- of an inch below the floor or counter surface. The stress on the screw caused by the drilling process will automatically cause the top portion of the screw to break off. Thus leaving you with a hole about the size of a regular finishing nail. Counter sinking is never required and concealing the tiny hole requires only the smallest amount of appropriate filler."

Anti-kickback devices

This is an amazing hold down and anti-kickback device. Each set of Board Buddies comes complete and ready to install on your fence or fixture. Yellow Buddies rotate in a clock-wise direction and will not rotate counter-clockwise preventing kickback on table saw and router tables. Green Buddies rotate in either direction so they are great for shapers where they act as a hold-down, not an anti-kickback device. Rather than permanently mounting them to your machinery, the 12" and 24" tracks allow you to move the Buddies from one machine to another. About $35. At Woodcraft

Virtually unaffected??

Assembled Roof Current Code Requirements

I want to erect roofing in one piece!! Wood (in)site News Letter: December 19, 2003Building codes generally require that the minimum net free ventilating area for attic vents be a 1/150 ratio of the area of the attic space being ventilated. The codes also generally allow the ratio to be reduced to 1/300 if the venting is “balanced,” and a vapor retarder of 1 perm or less is installed on the warm “ceiling” side of the insulation. Balanced ventilation means that 50% of the ventilation is provided low on the roof, while the other 50% is placed high. These requirements, however, have been developed and enforced largely without regard to: climatic differences, roof configuration, cathedral ceilings vs. open attics, and differences in the properties of materials used in roof assemblies. Outside of code requirements, many feel that ventilation can help control roof temperatures to 1) extend the service life of asphalt shingles and 2) reduce cooling loads in warm seasons. TenWolde and Rose [1999] conclude that shingle color, not venting, likely has greater effect on shingle durability. They also found that the quantity of attic insulation and location of ducts are most important to lowering attic temperatures. The key to moisture control is establishing a balance between wetting and drying. Design and construction must minimize the potential for wetting and maximize the potential for drying. From a performance standpoint, moisture control is important for preventing mold growth as well as physical deterioration of framing components within roof assemblies. In roofs with cavity insulation, mold growth can occur at the underside of roof sheathing in cold, heating climates, or on a ceiling-side vapor retarder in warm, humid, cooling climates. If moisture levels are excessive, deterioration of the sheathing can occur, particularly in cold climates. Moisture control for roof assemblies in all climates should begin at the “supply” side, using the primary strategies of: 1) interior humidity control, 2) air leakage control and 3) vapor diffusion control.

Pressure treated wood transition notes:

Wood (in)site News Letter: December 19, 2003: "The pressure treated wood market in Canada will have a different face in 2004. New preservatives to treat wood first introduced in early 2002 will become the mainstay of the industry in the coming year. ACQ (amine copper quat) and CA (copper azole) will replace the traditional CCA (chromated copper arsenate) in the treatment of pressure treated wood products destined for residential applications. CCA will continue to be used to treat wood for industrial, commercial and agricultural uses. In addition, existing inventories of CCA treated wood produced before January 1, 2004 can be sold into the residential market until exhausted. "

How much are total 2003 losses?

How much are total 2003 losses?Did you know? The damage from British Columbia’s forest fires is valued in billions of dollars of lost lumber. Estimates suggest that as much as $5.6-billion worth of finished lumber was lost in this summer’s Interior fires. The volume lost could amount to 14 billion board feet of lumber, which amounts to triple the annual allowable harvest in B.C.’s southern interior, or 75 per cent of Canada’s softwood shipments to the United States last year. Forecasting for Growth

Forecasting for Growth: "Strategic thinking is like making a movie. Every movie has a context (or story), which it uses to get you to experience a certain outcome (an emotion, in this case) at the end of the movie. Strategic thinking is much the same in that it requires you to envision what you want your ideal outcome to be for your business and then works backwards by focusing on the story of HOW you will be able to reach your vision. As you develop a strategic vision for your business, there are five different criteria that you should focus on. These five criteria will help you define your ideal outcome. In addition, they will help you set up and develop the steps necessary to make your business vision a reality. The following is a list of the five criteria of the strategic thinking process:

Organization. The organization of your business involves the people you will have working for you, the organizational structure of your business, and the resources necessary to make it all work. What will your organization look like? What type of structure will support your vision? How will you combine people, resources, and structure together to achieve your ideal outcome?

Observation. When you are looking down at the world from an airplane, you can see much more than when you are on the ground. Strategic thinking is much the same in that it allows you to see things from "higher up." By increasing your powers of observation, you will begin to become more aware of what motivates people, how to solve problems more effectively, and how to distinguish between alternatives.

Views. Views are simply different ways of thinking about something. In strategic thinking, there are four viewpoints to take into consideration when forming your business strategy: the environmental view; the marketplace view; the project view and the measurement view. Views can be used as tools to help you think about outcomes, identify critical elements and adjust your actions to achieve your ideal position.

Driving Forces. What are the driving forces that will make your ideal outcome a reality? What is your company's vision and mission? Driving forces usually lay the foundation for what you want people to focus on in your business (i.e., what you will use to motivate others to perform). Examples of driving forces might include: individual and organizational incentives; empowerment and alignment; qualitative factors such as a defined vision, values, and goals; productive factors like a mission or function; quantitative factors such as results or experience; and others such as commitment, coherent action, effectiveness, productivity, and value.

Ideal Position. After working through the first four phases of the strategic thinking process, you should be able to define your ideal position. Your ideal position outline should include: the conditions you have found to be necessary if your business is to be productive; the niche in the marketplace that your business will fill; any opportunities that may exist either currently or in the future for your business; the core competencies or skills required in your business; and the strategies and tactics you will use to pull it all together.

By working through these five areas, you will begin to get a clearer picture of exactly how your business vision can be accomplished. read more... "

Smog tests for your lawnmower?

With the help of Missouri Senator Kit Bond, Briggs & Stratton — the nation's largest small-engine manufacturer — recently lobbied for a federal exemption from California's strict new emission-control standards for small engines. (The engines in question are under 50 hp and typically run outdoor power equipment.) The measure, which prohibited California from enforcing more stringent standards than those of the federal government, was attached to a funding bill and passed. However, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Senator Dianne Feinstein countered that the exemption would make it difficult for the state to meet federally mandated clean-air requirements. In the end, the parties reached a compromise that allows California to retain its small-engine emission standards but won't allow other states to toughen theirs. So if you live in California, you'll soon see catalytic converters and other emission-reduction equipment added to your outdoor power equipment.

Spread the grid...

ArchitectureWeek - Photovoltaics at Home: "As the cost of photovoltaic (PV) technology declines, it is becoming more common for large companies and institutions to install vast arrays of PV cells to capture solar radiation and convert it into electricity. But until recently, it was the rare individual who would place expensive photoelectric panels on the roof of his or her house. Increasingly, however, lower costs and the appeal of an independent power supply have encouraged small businesses and homeowners to take a closer look at the options. According to energy experts at the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), the massive August 14, 2003 power outage in the eastern part of North America was 'a wake-up call to decision makers.' The regional power system failed, they say, because it was heavily loaded, near capacity, and too centralized. RMI had warned of the weakness of the grid for over 20 years, notably in the book Brittle Power: Energy Strategy for National Security, which describes the vulnerability of the North American electric grid. The solution, according to Kyle Datta, managing director of RMI's consulting practice, is distributed generation in smaller, modular, diverse, and redundant electrical devices across the grid, close to the loads they serve. He says: 'energy sources such as fuel cells, combined heat and power systems, solar panels, and micro-turbines can provide power at lower cost and greater reliability than the centralized power grid.' Pressure-treated 140 x 140 mm (5-1/2 x 5-1/2in) posts are placed in holes spaced at 1.2m (4ft) the posts should extend below ground as much as they do above. Treated lumber 38mm (1-1/2in) thick is placed against the posts during backfill so that the lumber is held in place by the backfill. The lumber may also be attached to the posts using galvanized nails or screws. Overlap the boards so that they join at different posts. Each board should span two bays. In poorly drained soils a 300mm (12in) thick layer of gravel should be placed at the bottom of the wall and another 300mm (12 in) layer used as backfill. "
