Getting Started With Drip

Drip irrigation is an easy way to water your yard in the most efficient, least labor intensive manor. With a timer, it can be an automated system that will mostly take care of itself, requiring only a bit of maintenance to keep things running smoothly. But getting to that point may seem to be a somewhat daunting task. In this series of articles, we hope to show you that it doesn't have to be that way and to give you some idea of how to approach the task.

Seal and Peal

pressure crack injector Emecole offers easy to remove temporary surface seal for crack repair

Emecole 322 Seal-n-Peal is an adhesive paste used for sealing concrete cracks prior to injection with the company's Emecole epoxy resins or urethane foams. It can be "peeled" from the surface of a repaired crack after adequate cure of the injection resin or foam.

Grinding, chipping, sanding or burning is no longer required for surface seal removal when finished appearance is important. It is made for rack repair applications, such as residential basement walls and swimming pools, when the surface seal must be removed for appearance reasons.

Emecole makes a compelling argument [pdf] on behalf of the homeowner to use crack repair versus additional drain tile improvements.

Zip SEAL’N PEEL with D-Limonene is made by Malco in Canada for interior temporary caulking and sealing. Peels off.

Roofing Wholesale Supply sells rolls of aluminium sheeting called Seal N Peal. 6 inch roll of 33 feet costs only $14.95

DAP makes a seal and peal but it's not listed in their current catalog.

Art of Town Design

I've always thought that towns must have a 'square', a focus that provides a sense of social mixing and community. Here's a comment from The Town Paper

What New Towns Learn from Old Towns

The North American equivalent to a piazza -- the green or square -- is derived mainly from northern European examples and is never surrounded by buildings to the degree of a typical Italian piazza. Similarly, the American plaza is inherited from Spanish models. However, these plazas are not enclosed like those of Central or South America and are often no different from squares or greens. In fact, the distinction tends to be nominal rather than physical. The Charter of the New Urbanism notes:

... "squares should be safe, comfortable and interesting to the pedestrian. Properly configured, they encourage walking and enable neighbors to know each other and protect their communities ... public gathering places require important sites to reinforce community identity and the culture of democracy. They deserve distinctive form, because their role is different from that of other buildings and places that constitute the fabric of the city."
