Nation's Forest Census

The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service provides the information needed to assess America's forests.

As the Nation's continuous forest census, our program projects how forests are likely to appear 10 to 50 years from now. This enables us to evaluate whether current forest management practices are sustainable in the long run and to assess whether current policies will allow the next generation to enjoy America's forests as we do today.

DrillSpotter

drillspotterDrillSpotter® can locate the exact entry and exit points for a hole in a wall or other structure up to 40 inches thick.

Electricians can quickly identify hidden metal in walls and ceilings by placing the tool's transmitter directly over the area to be drilled. A continuous tone will indicate the presence of iron beams, metal cables, or pipes. Product of the Year

DrillSpotter®'s primary function is to precisely align the receiver with the transmitter, through the use of a magnetic field, optical and acoustical signals. Once you have aligned the receiver, on one side of a wall, ceiling or other structure, with the transmitter on the other, you have identified the exact entry and exit points for drilling a hole. At the same time, the DrillSpotter measures the distance between the transmitter and receiver. This makes the choice of drill bit length easy.

"waterjet" cutting

Picture shows what can be accomplished with waterjet cutting and regular floor tile.

A "waterjet" cutting system utilizes a narrow stream of water under extremely high pressure to "erode" a precise and narrow path through material to be cut. A cutting table located over a capture/recycling tank holds the workpiece in place while a cutting nozzle directs a water stream which impacts material at speeds faster than the speed of sound. The entire cutting assembly travels along a CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) track which is controlled by various CAD (Computer Aided Design) software. Nonmetals and relatively soft materials can be cut using pure water. For harder materials such as metals and stone, a garnet abrasive is added to the water to augment it's cutting ability.

A kerf (thickness of a cut) of as little as 0.010 inches and cut accuracy of ±0.005 inches enables waterjet cutting systems to cut extremely intricate designs accurately and with little or no filing or finishing.

Foams for building

The conversion to “cleaner” blowing agents in the polyurethane foam business is largely done, and now much effort is being directed toward optimizing formulations to deliver better foams that are also easier to process and lower in cost. The latter goal is particularly challenging at a time when industry has been bombarded with un-precedented increases in materials and energy prices. The replacement blowing agents also have their own performance problems to solve in areas such as system compatibility, flowability, insulation value, and dimensional stability.

Deck rail safety

DECKLOK provides a bolted connection between the guard railing post and the floor joists of the deck.

IRC 2000 now requires the guard rail post to resist a force of 500lbs at a point 36" above the surface of the deck. DECKLOK does this!

Mounting the brackets to the base of the rail post, or to the deck board, creates a solid mounting surface. Testing confirms that the DECKLOK System increases guard rail lateral load capacity by 4 times over common methods.

Women in Construction

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) originally began as Women in Construction of Fort Worth, Texas. It was founded in 1953 by 16 women working in the construction industry.

Knowing that women represented only a small fraction of the construction industry, the founders organized NAWIC to create a support network. Women in Construction of Fort Worth was so successful that it gained its national charter in 1955 and became the National Association of Women in Construction. NAWIC's core purpose is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry.

Timber!

In case you missed it, in the last issue (May/June 2006) of the Sawmill & Woodlot Magazine, there is a fantastic article on felling trees by Irwin Post.

As a forest owner, this information is really important! Great Job of writing, Irwin.
As a wood manufacturer, the method he describes is very valuable.

I used to fell trees with the big front notch, then a back cut. As the tree starts to slowly lean, then the notch closes and the tree breaks off.... a lot of damage is done to the butt log. A logger never realizes how much splitting has occured when using this method - much of the damage doesn't show in the fresh cut log. When you sawmill the logs into lumber and then kiln dry the boards - then you see all the splits and breaks that happened when the tree was felled with the old standard method.

Once I learned the small open face notch and bore cut method of felling, my lumber quality improved significantly. This is good business!

Thanks to Irwin and the SawmillMag staff for this one!

Safer splitting with an axe.

safe wood splitting jigSplitting wood on a chopping block can be painful with wood flying and hitting you, or the chance of the axe hitting you in the leg. Here is a safe way to split wood.

Obtain an old ATV tire and cut out the center cord on one side to make a larger opening. On the other side, cut the center cord out just inside the tire. Slit the tire out from the center in four locations; this will produce tabs that will allow the tire to be screwed to your cutting block.

This setup prevents wood from flying and hitting you or anyone else. Just pick out the wood and put it into a wheelbarrow to move to your wood pile.

Zero Energy Housing

All Canadian Homes to be Zero-Energy Homes by 2030?

In Canada, a group of homebuilders and renewable energy enthusiasts, The Net-Zero Energy Home Coalition, have been working on and discussing these ideas for several years. They've concluded that Canada has the potential to become a world leader in the design and construction of NZEHs, and they're serious about it: in a presentation to the Toronto Green Building Festival in October, 2005, the Net-Zero Energy Home Coalition predicted that by 2030 all new homes built in Canada would meet a net-zero energy standard.

So how are they going to do it? Starting this year, in May, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation began accepting Expressions of Interest from builder and developer teams to participate in what they are now calling the “Net Zero Energy Healthy Housing” initiative (NZEHH).

Suburbs should freeze well

...there have been few serious, thoughtful accounts of what it was like to grow up in a suburb's symbolically potent, if resolutely bland, landscape.
"Scaring the living daylights out of us wasn't what our parents had in mind when they staked out their claim to the American Dream during California's suburban boom of the 1950s and '60s.

"Like their neighbors, they had left the Midwest, or the South, or the East Coast in search of brand new lives in brand new towns. "We never looked at a used house," Beers' father remembers. "A used house simply did not interest us."

"In the suburbs, refugees from the working class found a place without history. In those quiet, orderly, homogenous settlements, nothing unusual or unsettling was ever supposed to happen: change isn't needed in a place that's already perfect.

"The suburbs not only had no past -- they anticipated no real future."
From a Salon article: 'The generation that came of age in the midst of the American Dream still has nightmares about it.'

Desparate? Do still.

The Amphora Society has designed and built a continuous fuel ethanol still capable of producing 40-50 gallons of fuel ethanol a day. Fed with regular fermented wash, it produced 95% fuel ethanol in a steady stream.

There is nothing new in the use of alcohol as a motor fuel. In 1872, when Nikolaus Otto invented the internal combustion engine, gasoline was not available. Ethyl alcohol at 180-190 proof was the specified fuel. The model "T" Ford was designed to run on the available crude gasolines, alcohol, or any combination of the two. Alcohols in general and ethanol, in particular, make excellent motor fuels. The reason alcohol fuel has not been fully exploited is that, up until now, gasoline has been cheap, available, and easy to produce.

Insulation Cutting Tool

When cutting fiberglass insulation, the most effective way is to compress it on a solid surface and slice it with a utility knife, otherwise the knife will tear the insulation which results in tiny glass fibers being released into the air, which are harmful if breathed into the lungs and can irritate the skin.

The EZ HolderTM is a tool that secures and stabilizes this flexible material for cutting with a simple single step.

    Decades in crafting

Lindsay Books, which publishes reprints of turn-of-the-century engineering and popular science articles in addition to classics like their Gingery guides to building machine shops out of scrap metal, makes it clear how much of a community built up around these self-same hobbyist communities (automobile nuts, bicycle enthusiasts, all the steam engine cranks and rail-hounds and radio freaks and jet engine-obsessed gearheads and photography junkies of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries) back when the technologies were young and vital. If there was a performance tweak to be made, a patent to be filed, a letter bragging about one's accomplishment to the appropriate fanzine to be written, and a quick buck to be regretted when it didn't appear, it happened. via snarkout

PLUG-IN addresses the difficulty the elderly can have with electrical outlets.

While the market is full of countless flush outlets and child-protection units, none address the unique limitations of the elderly.

The PLUG-IN’s upward-angled faceplate allows users to better orient themselves and a cord’s prongs before bending over or reaching behind furniture. This creates a direct sightline from the human eye to the faceplate and minimizes the distance necessary for a person to extend. It also provides additional leverage when removing of a difficult plug. The PLUG-IN fits onto current outlet standards and is easily installed by the user.

    Robertson ’square drive’ screw

box of Robertson screwsThe original Robertson ’square drive’ screw was revolutionary in 1908 and is [may still be] the best design today.

Amongst their many attributes, Robertson screws are durable, self aligning, and because they tend to stay on the driver, can be easily screwed with one hand and in tight places.

    More from Aardvaark
    :
Not many people in other parts of the world know about the Robertson screw. Well, stand back....

(If you don't want to hear a frothing diatribe on comparative screwdriver design, go here.)

If you want to read a bunch of Canadians grousing about the Robertson's lack of recognition and calling Bob Vila a "bearded ex-ice-cream salesman", you can go here:

For an American view see: the "square-drive" screw

For a (not so clear) profile of the Robertson screw and screwdriver, go to the Robertson web site:

The advantages of the Robertson screwdriver and screw are:

    1) The driver doesn't strip the screw. You can re-use the screws several times if you want.

    2) Because the screwdriver is so deep-seated, it delivers massive torque and security (you're not likely to have the driver escape and spear your hand.)

    3) You can drive the screw with a power drill, and the fully set screw simply stops the drill dead. It doesn't skip like a Phillips (annoying, since most drywall screws are Phillips), and

    4) You can actually hold the screwdriver (with the screw on the tip) in one hand, leaving the other hand free to hold the wood or whatever. You can even hold the driver and screw upside down and the screw doesn't fall. Try that with a Phillips!

You can assume that the Phillips does the opposite of all of the above.
